Underoath Taipei Concert: MV小故事 | It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door

時間拉回2004年六月, Underoath發行了第四張專輯《The Changing Of Times》, 專輯獲得廣大迴響和在主流市場的成就。知名音樂網站Allmusic將這張專輯定義為在另類搖滾的風格下, 可以稱為Screamo / Post-hardcore / Melodic hardcore, 已經完全脫離純正的Metalcore範疇。而至今仍舊被許多人視為Underoath最經典的一張專輯。

《The Changing Of Times》裡的其中一首<It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door > 網友對於此MV有著不同的見解, 其一是覺得在描述前主唱達拉斯過世女友, 死於一場車禍中, 內心的傷痛使他淹沒在每每的夜晚, 但是人生仍需前進, 必須離開這般愛, 始之交付與上帝, 賦予自己新的意義回到世界。

譯者後記:

Underoath的歌詞, 語意很不明確, 會有很多暗喻或脾語的詞彙, 所以如果作詞人沒有曾經說明這首歌的含義的話, 很容易翻錯或誤解。

所以在翻譯前, 大概找了一下有沒有這首歌歌詞的意思, 找到很多不同人的見解, 不過大部份是網友依自身對這首歌的體會而寫下的解釋或意見, 所以蠻多人在上面爭論不休的. 我能找到最有可能是正確的含義的是下面這段話:

This song is pretty intense - we have a car crash with intent to kill... all for love. When we spoke with UnderOath drummer Aaron Gillespie in 2011, he deconstructed the song for us. Said Aaron: "It's kind of a fictitious story. And it's kind of a morbid story. I was 20 years old when Spencer (Chamberlain) and I are writing that song. We had this idea about what happens when you love someone, really love them, truly love them. In the Bible it says that we're to love our wives as Christ loved the church, which is an impossibility, because we don't have the capacity to love like Christ does, and it's impossible.

So we had this morbid idea that there would be this guy, he would be driving a car. And if you read the lyrics, the verse involves a car accident. There's this guy and he's driving this car, and he's so in love with this girl that he decides to kill them both. He's so in love with her that he realizes it is impossible to love her the way he's supposed to, so he decides to just drive off the road. That's the narrative line of the story in the song. But it's really about loving someone and knowing that you'll never be able, in your capacity, to love them the proper way."

這大概是說鼓手Aaron在2011年的時候, 對這首歌的歌詞作了一番解釋. 他說這是一個虛構的憂鬱病態故事, 當他和主唱Spencer在寫這首歌時, 他們想到如果你很愛一個人, 是真的愛他, 愛到無可比擬時, 在聖經上有句話是說: 你們應當愛你們的妻子如同耶穌愛祂的教會一般。他們覺得這個是不可能的, 因為我們是人, 我們絕對沒有能力可以和耶穌有一樣的愛 (因為耶穌的愛是最大的什麼人的愛都比不上)

所以他們虛構了一個男生, 他開著他的車載著他的女友, 這個男生因為太愛她了所以決定把他們自己給殺了. 他因為太愛她了所以瞭解到這是不可能發生的, 因為他是人不是耶穌. 所以他就開車去撞電火條了(在MV裡可以看到). 最後Aaron說這首歌就是真的關於愛一個人, 和理解到在人能去愛的能力裡, 永遠都無法達到一個適合的方式。
